What is it?
Fatty liver is the buildup of fat in your liver. There are 2 types: nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and alcoholic fatty liver disease. The accumulation of fat prevents the liver from functioning properly. It prevents the liver from filtering toxins out of your blood, which can make you sick.
Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver
This is the most common type of fatty liver and is generally harmless. A more serious type, nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) causes the liver to become swollen which leads to cirrhosis (scar tissue in the liver). NASH means your liver is inflamed and there may be a possibility that your liver cells are damaged. Liver cirrhosis is the precursor to liver cancer and heart disease.
Alcoholic Fatty Liver
People who over consume alcohol – more than 1 drink a day for women and 2 for men are more likely to get this type. Too much alcohol consumption can lead to fat buildup inside liver cells which makes it difficult for your liver to function properly. Women who are obese raises your odds. Genetic factors also contribute to getting this disease. Continued drinking can lead to alcoholic hepatitis, liver failure, cirrhosis, and a higher chance of liver cancer.
Most of the time, there are mild to no symptoms. That’s why most people aren’t even aware they have fatty liver. Some people may feel pain in the middle or right side of their abdomen. For some, they may feel tired and fatigued as the liver loses its ability to eliminate harmful toxins from the body.
Since there are often no symptoms, doctors often miss fatty liver disease. Special blood tests, ultrasound, or a CT scan can help confirm a fatty liver diagnosis. A biopsy may be required to check for signs of the disease.
There is no medication for the disease. Good news is there’s a lot you can do to try to control it – even reverse the damage. Lifestyle and dietary changes have been proven successful in reverting even eliminating the disease. A nutritious diet full of good fats, lots of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains is a surefire way in disease prevention and control.
Regular exercise even a daily brisk walk can help get rid of some of the fat in your liver. If you have alcoholic fatty liver disease, you have to stop drinking. If you diagnosis the disease early, you may be able to completely reverse the damage. Cutting out alcohol for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease can help too.
